UB Wings D1 team stays undefeated! B Team stays above 500!
The University at Buffalo's D1 Team went into All-Star Weekend with 5 games on slate. Their first would be against Hofstra. After a quiet first half UB broke the game open with 3 goals in latter part of the second. They put the game out of reach, adding 3 in the 3rd to win 7-2. After an hour break, Tyler Walser, Shaun Golden, Chris Kendall and goaltender Alexx Christie represented UB in the All-Star Game. Kendall, Walser and Golden would combine for 5 points and Christie stopped 7 of 9 shots in the 1st period. The D1 All-Stars would eventually lose to the D2 All-Stars 8-5. The four would rejoin their team in a battle against rival Towson, a game that can be seen on ECRHA Gameday and had Shaun Golden mic'd up. UB would get out to another slow start, being down early in the second. However, they would pull away, scoring the last 8 out of the last 9 goals of the contest. Freshman sensation Chris Kendall had 6 points in the 9-3 victory. Buffalo's 3rd game was a rematch with Hofstra. Buffalo dominated early and cruised to an 8-1 win. Bad blood carried over from the last game as this game ended with a scrum behind the benches. UB's last game of the day would be against Penn State. Fatigued seemed to set in as UB had an 8-4 lead late in the second but relinquished 4 goals over the last 13 minutes of the game. They would escape with a 9-8 win. There last game was a Sunday afternoon matinee against Rutgers. UB would tighten up their defense only letting up 16 shots, helping Alexx Christie get his first shutout of the season. The D1 is 15-0-1 on the season and ranked 2nd in the country. Some of the D1 players will be in Detroit next weekend for TORHS WinterNats and they will all get together in two weeks for an interregional event in Chicago. They are scheduled to play #1 Lindenwood, #4 UMSL, #7 Central Michigan and #14 North Texas.
The B team escaped Feasterville with a 2-2 record and a 7-5 record on the season. The B squad opened their semester against Hofstra. The Wings scored with 2 seconds left in the first to open the scoring. They would have a 5-2 lead with only a minute remaining but Hofstra would score twice in the final minute to bring them within one. UB would play West Chester next. The Wings would go down 3-1 before a power play goal cut the lead in half. This would be the closest they would come as they would lose the contest 5-2. Jeff Elias, Nick Narchus and Bryan Feiler would represent UB in the All-Star game. After going down 5-1 the B All-Stars would tie the game at 5. They would then go down 8-5. Despite pulling the goalie they would fall 8-7. The B team would get back together and play rival Penn State. The game was tied at 2 until halfway through the second period when Penn State would score 5 straight goals and eventually win 9-3. The Wings ended their weekend with a game against Suffolk CC. After Suffolk tied the game with 5 minutes left, Ben Kozar would bat the puck through the goalies legs. Jeff Elias would snipe one over the goalies shoulder to put the game out of reach at 4-2. The B squad will go to Pottstown, PA in two weeks which will be their last event before regionals.
