Brown Turns Wings into Gold and Silver!!!
21u Wins Gold and 18u Wins Silver at TORHS Nationals
The 18u Wings had won a few regional tournaments this year but their ultimate goal was to win a National Championship. That road would end in Taylor, Michigan at TORHS. They opened up their campaign against rivals, Bar Down Billionaires. Both teams would fight hard but the Wings would come out on top by the score of 5 to 3. Next, the Wings would play a hard working Great Britain team. The Wings would win with the help of a great shootout goaltending performance by Shane Irwin and Russ Rizzos new move, the backhand, between the legs of the goaltender. In the next game the Wings would play Black Ice out of Long Island. Irwin would turn aside all 11 shots in route to a 4-0 shutout win. The Wings would play another Black Ice team in their last round robin game. They would mercy them 9-1. The Wings were given the 2nd seed, losing the tiebreaker to Pittsburgh Fusion. The Wings would play the 3rd seeded, Bar Down Billionaires. The Billionaires were short their best 3 players as they got into some fisticuffs with Great Britain at the end of their quarter finals game. The Wings would win the game 5-3 and would face Pittsburgh Fusion in the National Championship game. The Wings were down 3-2 going in to the second half before Chad Loughren tied the game early in the 2nd. In overtime, Russ Rizzo would take a hooking penalty to stop a scoring chance. The Fusion would score on the ensuing powerplay to win the National Championship. The Wings would take home the silver medal.
The Junior team had the same thing on their mind as the 18u team, a National Championship. They started the tournament against Nex Gen, from Pennsylvania. They were a new team and the Wings got the better of them by the score of 3-1. Next, the Wings would play Great Britain. They would play them well and win 5-1. The Wings next opponent was the GoodSport Jaguars out of New Jersey. A Wings match penalty in the first period would lead to 3 powerplay goals and ultimately a 5-1 Jaguars win. The Wings final round robin game was against Tour Excitement. They would play them hard and seemed to have tied the game late in the second but a quick whistle ended the threat. They would lose 4-3. After an upset in Round Robin play the Wings would get the number 2 seed. They would seek revenge against the GoodSport Jaguars. The Wings would mercy them 9-1. The Wings then met the number 4 seed, Great Britain, in the National Championship Game. Great Britain scored midway through the first to make it 1-0. Then, with 9 seconds left in the first half, Shaun Golden put one past the goalkeeper to tie it up. The next 28 minutes were scoreless. The teams would need double overtime to decide the contest. In double overtime, Todd Lyness won the faceoff in his own zone, faked a slapshot, walked around the defensemen and went bardown to win the game. Shaun Golden was named the teams MVP as he played the last 20 minutes of the game.
